Bolt Speedman AKA Rob Dyrdek Undefeated Jockey and Living Legend

31 08 2009

It gives me great pleasure to once again welcome Mr. Del Mar, otherwise known as Matthew Galbreth, for another guest author piece.  When we last left him, Matt was galvanizing some ideas he’d been kicking around in his head about how to generate renewed interest for the game.  Now he’s returned with another idea for how to connect with the younger generation that the sport so badly needs.

Without further adieu, take it away, Matt.

**************************************************

The horse racing world has never seen a talent like this and probably never will again.  Bolt Speedman rode a promising young talent aptly named MEGA HORSE, who he also owns, to victory at Hollywood Park June 30th only to retire that same day with a one for one undefeated record.  Maybe some of you have never heard of Bolt Speedman, but many of you probably have heard of Pro Skateboarder and MTV star Rob Dyrdek.  Mr. Dyrdek has many talents and goes by many names, some of you may know him as R&B sensation Bobby Light.  I think his most impressive performance yet came on the day the man wore the soon to be legendary DC silks.

The entire horse racing industry knows the importance of attracting new fans, horseplayers and owners to our sport.  Recently the industry has been on the right track by trying to attract more youth to our sport. With Mr. Dyrdek involved and the beach culture that Del Mar happily attracts every season we may just get some new youthful fans that challenge the notion that horse racing is a sport for the wealthy and may not be the sport of kings, it’s a sport for everyone.  This is evident in TVG’s Pick 4 Posse and has always been a main staple of my favorite track’s marketing strategy, Del Mar.  Horse racing has been called the sport of kings, long before that and still to this day surfing is also called the sport of kings.  The battle for this namesake finds neutral ground under the white California Flag of truce where the surf meets the turf at old Del Mar.

I’m sure some of you are wondering, surfing the sport of kings?  That’s right.  When Captain James Cook first discovered the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 he found what seemed to him some rather strange behavior from the natives.  He saw them standing on strange wooden planks and moving effortlessly along the face of breaking waves.  He was even more shocked to see the royalty of this culture take part in this activity and be for what seemed to him inappropriately dressed for monarchy.  The ancient Hawaiian royals even had surfboards shaped to give them an edge on their subjects and special locations where only royalty could take part in this strange activity, hence he deemed it the sport of kings.

I’m on the wrong side of 25, but still hold the tag of a 20 something.  Most of my friends are around my same age and most of them have very different and usually negative opinions about my pursuit of being a true professional horseplayer and my love of the game.  They change their tune when Del Mar is open and ask me for handicapping advice on a daily basis.  Why is this?  It’s because they are not going there for horse racing they are going there for dollar beers, a chance at meeting the lovely ladies in attendance and a day of enjoying the view of the Pacific.  Many of them, especially those who made some money off my plays, end up fans of our sport simply by getting in the door and having a chance to see these amazing equine athletes.  I wish Del Mar was open more often as it seems to be our best chance at making horse racing cool and bringing in some new fans.

Bolt Speedman AKA Rob Dyrdek may have done just as much for our sport in just one episode of his hit MTV show “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” as all the top horse racing marketing researchers have in a year.  I would hope all of you try to watch this episode, maybe use the old DVR as a way to return the favor he has done for all of us tune in on Thursday nights and fling this man some ratings, I started doing it for Jim Rome for the same reasons.

I have another idea that goes beyond just Mr. Dyrdek.  When the many celebrities that love horse racing attend the track let’s roll out the red carpet, let’s treat them like royalty and let’s try to make them more visible and more vocal about our beloved sport.  Maybe have a Rob Dyrdek day where we invite many action sports superstars to watch MEGA HORSE trounce the competition.  If there are concerns about having so many young people there on one day, I think that can be resolved by giving them a place to go.  Maybe set a section aside for the 20 somethings where they can all hang out in the same area and have a different place for families to go, maybe the infield, here’s another one… how about pony rides for the kids in the infield, a strong presence of security and a daycare facility where the parents can drop them off for an hour or two and enjoy some time as a couple.

It can be done my good friends and I think the time to hesitate is through, let’s see horse racing break on through to the other side.  The side of major network coverage, the side where the newcomers don’t feel intimidated, but welcomed, the side where there are many different ways to enjoy the track and everyone has a place just for them.  If you see someone new at the track or online at sites like the TVG Community help them, I promise you it won’t cut into your win odds much if any at all and you may have a lot more fun, I am.  This may not be the sport of kings stateside, leave that for the Europeans, we are democratic and united baby.  Let’s see that California Flag and the DC silks more and more, and let’s all give a big hand to Bolt Speedman a brave man who climbed on one these beasts and rode it to victory in his very first start as a jockey.

I like how you mention that many people become fans just by walking through the doors and seeing these amazing equine athletes. The first live race day I attended was at Pimlico for the 2007 Preakness Stakes with my sister. Untill then I had spent my time watching live races on TV and devouring every book on horse racing I could get my hands on. Traffic was terrible so we walked through the gates when the second race was just starting. I remember hearing the call to post and getting shivers up and down my spine. It was like hearing a call from the history books, thrilling to say the least and I dragged my sister up to the apron as fast as I could. The horses were just thundering into the home stretch as I ran up to the rail and caught sight of them. It was incredible, my voice caught in my throat, and I stood motionless, awed beyond words by the amazing sight. When the field streaked by for the finish I felt the breeze sweep across my face and knew there was no way anything would ever be able to feel that good.
Sorry that was so long, but just wanted to convey to you that before that race I was perfectly content to watch the races on TV or read about them later on the Bloodhorse website. But afterwards, nothing compares to the desire to be right there at the track for every single race. Same thing happens when I bring my family and friends with me. Everyone tells me afterward that they were not expecting it to be that fun and exciting and they’re always more willing to come the second time, sometimes they even suggest it.
So I absolutly agree with you, get them through those gates, let them take it all in and chances are they’ll be hooked.

Thanks for posting. I love Rob from his Rob & Big days (and I’m a 40 something mom). Part of my job at NTRA/BC when I worked there 7 yrs ago was to get celebs to major events. I got them there, but there was no help from the NTRA press to get the word out to the world. Glad to see Bolt in the game…cutey for sure!!

Well-written piece, and THANK YOU for finding something unique and pointing it out to us. Gems like this are what I look out for more than the standard “So-and-So wins Race Name.” I used to watch a little of Rob and Big, and from that it really seems like he’s a general animal lover.

I found this video that has more before the race, in the paddock:

I like Del Mar, but it bugs me sometimes because of how horse racing isn’t the main focus sometimes. I’m not the normal person in my age group, in that I don’t go there to hang out, but to really watch the races.

Thanks for the additional youtube clip! You have no idea how hard Kevin and I tried to find a good one of the race itself.

Sorry you already wasted part of your life wtaching that poor quality vid. Here’s a way better one with the whole race!

Mr. Del Mar

Thank you so much! This is the one we were after, but it kept blocking us. For everyone only interested in the horse racing, please use the timeline at the bottom of the clip and fast forward to 4:20. Thanks again! This is the best part!

Very cool – THAT”s the video we were looking for! Outstanding stuff – thanks for sharing.

Brian – know what’s funny? The 3rd race that ’07 Preakness afternoon was won by a horse named Smart Hit. I remember that vividly. Would’ve been the first race then that you saw all the way through most likely. He was the biggest “price” horse of the day. Was listed on the morning line at 15/1. First flash of the tote board he was suddenly favored at 5/2. Slowly he ticked back up to around 12/1 or so before post time.

The night before I had woken Amy up raving about how he “couldn’t lose” – and he wound up winning for fun. He ended up as one of my favorite claiming horses in recent memory as he won a few more claimers in West Virginia before winding up his career.

Great memories. That day will always be among the most special of my entire life.

Great story-I have some follow up questions-what was the conditions of the race (maiden, claimer, etc?). Where were all the fans, the place looked empty?
what has the horse done since that race?

That is so neat Kevin, I love how “small” the world feels sometimes!!

Part of the problem with getting new fans is the time it takes though to learn how to read the past results of races, and all the many other little things you need to know about each horse race. It is easy to someone who has been following it for years. Im doing it almost 8 years now. You can tell someone that knows what they are talking about in horse racing in just a few mintues of talking to them.

It is like learning to read sheet music. Most people are not going to put the time and effort into it to understand it. I am learning on my own, but it takes a lot of practice on the piano and reading books and tips online all the time.

3 09 2009
Kevin Stafford

I agree with you, Mike – it’s not the easiest game to “learn” – but we do an awful job of facilitating the learning process.

Two thoughts on that which I hope to expand upon ASAP – fantasy gaming and video games. More to come on that in a moment.

will mr. delmar please answer my question?

6 09 2009
Mr. Del Mar

Tony: No! Do your own research, you just post negative comments. Of course it wasn’t a stakes race, it was just a fun article about a brave and creative individual. Will Tony please get on a horse and jockey it to victory? Of course not. Just enjoy the fun in life and accept it for what it is. The man climbed on the back of a thoroughbred and rode it to victory against other well seasoned jocks in his first and only attempt. That was his first go at it. How about we see Tony to do a 360 kickflip to backside nosegrind? Oh what not going to happen? What’s with all the neggy vibes broseph? Just enjoy something new man. I mean no harm, just want to open some minds up. I hope you are okay with my comment, I’m a horseplayer like you and we are a team. Sorry dude, but I think you were critical of my last article, I’m on your side man. No Rob Dyrdek will not be riding in the Breeder’s Cup, nor will Mega Horse if that is your question.

6 09 2009
Mr. Del Mar

To Tony and to all of the tribe: I made mention in the article about how surfing and horse racing deem their sports “the sport of kings”. In surfing and with all surfers we have something called “the unseen tribe”. Which basically means that we look out for one another both in the water and on land. I’d like to see horseplayers adopt the same philosophy both at the track and off. Let’s be the unseen tribe. Through unity much can be acomplished. Let’s act like a tribe my bro, let’s unify. I stand here with an olive branch. We are better off as a team my good friend. I know your comment was not out of line it was more so a question that I failed to answer, but maybe we can all join forces and acomplish something great. So what do you and all horseplayers say, can we unify?

22 09 2009
Phil

what class of race did Rob win? at what distance? anyone know who the trainer of his horse is? what kind of odds did he win at? an old drf pdf from that day would be nice. just curious because it seems as if his barn knew they were fielding a winner that day to put him in the mount.

22 09 2009
Phil

I apologize I just noticed Tony asked a similar question and you refused to answer. If you are serious about your horseplayers unite speech, I dont see how you can be so reluctant to share information with fellow players. I only came across your blog because I was googling trying to find out the answers to the very questions Tony and I are inquiring about. Dont worry about answering it for me. Because of the uncooperative attitude you have shown above, I will not be visiting this page again. lame

My, my Mr. Delmar!
a bit hard on Tony weren’t you!

I didn’t think his posts (before you ripped him a new one)…were negative.
P.S….SSSS
I have heard and read and watched, that the horse racing world is full of creepy freaks and they are only in it for the money. There is drugging, killing and mistreatment of the animals who are not money winners. They “retire” them at young age, and basically kick them to the curb when they are lame or “losers”. They sell them to unsuspecting people…and hold auctions and just get rid of them any way they can….The jockeys (almost all of them) are purgers
Just a little of the dark side…..and there’s a lot of it.

I love horses, and all animals…in fact I have one, and have had them in the past. I used to be into watching horse races and thought about betting in the casinos. (live in Reno) ….
untilll……..I educated myself on the “sport” nasty, ugly.

BTW ..I love Rob Dyrdek and watch both his shows…he is talented, cute, and FUNNY as alll helll…so this has nothing to do with him….maybe he did not know…and he certainly did nothing wrong…I have noticed on his shows with animals in them that he never takes things too far (i.e. the mice on the mini skateboards)…..returning the turtle to his pond….etc….I LOVE HIM for that!!!!

one more thing…
read the book Sea Biscuit
and watch the old series Jockeys…just those two things will show you a lot.

Also wanted to add that I shopped around for thoroughbreds and saw a lot of lame unwanted ones out there. I couldn’t believe what I saw. I wouldn’t ride a few because of the shape they were in. I paid to have one wormed and trimmed (hooves) That particular one was sold in a sort of raffle. He was bought for $2,500…and left in a pasture unattended for a couple years…no vet care nothing….looked skinny and terrible by the time I saw him…I think the dipsh*t “owner” called him, “just a syndicate horse”I did what I could do at the time for that horse..
….after that…I stopped looking….if i could I would have a thoroughbred retirement ranch…can’t afford..
so sad what people do to animals…:(

Why delete my first post?
I wrote a second one (the one above) and your system said “you have already said that”

I just read your one hundred things about me….
I scanned some and fully read others..
I think Chris Walken rules too! We have other things in common as well……
But I don’t use spell check.. :)

I am sure you are a fine person and all..but
I did not see anywhere in your 100 items that you actually love the horses as the living, breathing, feeling creatures that they are. Maybe since you spend so much time on horse racing, you could start to advocate for their well being and better treatment of them? Time well spent.
Just sayin….

For some reason this got stuck in my moderation queue. Christy, I hear what you are saying about the evils of the sport, but would encourage you to look deeper. the experience I’ve had is that most people involved with the sport are horse lovers first and foremost. Sadly there are some bad eggs though…and just like any other thing humans are involved with, those folks tend to dominate the headlines. Get to know some of the folks involved and it will restore your faith in humanity (with respect to horse racing). :-)

People who leave animals in such condition (not you…..the owner) should be beaten mercilessly. It’s no different to me then flagrant child abuse. If you ever want to do a small thing to help ( lord knows we can’t afford a horse ourselves) then look up “old friends” or Sharla Sanders’ “the second race” retirement/rescue programs. Talk about great folks. I

Negative comments? “Tony” was asking pertinent questions that we were all curious about. Hence, the only reason all of us found your sh*t article.

You thought he was trolling simply because he asked you the question that we all searched for on Google??? “Did Rob Dyrdek really win a horse race?”

We were curious about how much reality was actually involved in the “reality tv show” that we all enjoy watching.

AND we were doing the research… Maybe you shouldn’t have written a completely irrelevant inaccurate depiction of the events you POS…

Way to troll a visitor who may in fact be interested in your “sport” you ignorant loser.
