Kay Ying Star Has a Great Chance in the Hong Kong Derby
Hong Kong Derby, 8.35 Sha Tin
The ex-Irish trained Waikuku who was trained by John Oxx sets the standard in this year’s Hong Kong Derby, having won his last four races at Sha Tin. He has raced solely in handicap company and takes his first step up to graded company here.
Mission Tycoon finished second in the Hong Kong Classic Mile at 204/1 before taking the Hong Kong Classic Cup over 1m1f at odds of 92/1. He brings in the best and most consistent form from the classic series but it still looks likely to go off at a double figure price despite his classic form.
Kay Ying Star has finished third in both of the classic races and he could do better with this step up to 10 furlongs in this race. He is another ex-European, trained by Andrew Balding, running as Urban Aspect who ran up a 3-win sequence before being sold to race in Hong Kong. He won his first outing here at Sha Tin in handicap company and produced two fine place efforts in the Classic and he is likely still to have improvement on only his fourth race in Hong Kong; he looks a decent each-way bet at 12/1 with a great draw in stall 2.
