This page is intended to highlight some of the resources I think any aspiring handicapper would greatly benefit from.
- Ron Correll’s Morning Line blog: In my humble opinion Ron is the best handicapper there is and his passion for the game and love of horses is unequaled. He currently writes for the State Journal Register and gained critical acclaim as the “man who picked Giacomo” when he was 50/1 in the 2005 Kentucky Derby (only the 2nd biggest upset winner in all of Kentucky Derby history). That being said, Ron is the farthest thing from a one-trick pony there is and his regular articles and insights into the game are absolute can’t miss information for any fans of the game or aspiring handicappers. Ron’s eye for horseflesh is unparalleled and he has an innate ability to envision precisely how a race will be run days in advance. He’s also a consummate gentleman and has helped me improve my game tremendously over the last year. In fact, if there’s one guy in the entire industry I aspire to be like, it’s probably Ron. Handicappers would be wise to make frequent visits to his blog, The Morning Line, prior to finalizing their selections on any of the major races in the country. - Frank DiTondo’s One Minute Handicapper: Any aspiring handicapper would do himself or herself a huge favor by taking a look at the information Frank has compiled in his invaluable book, The One Minute Handicapper. A valuable resource for newcomers and veterans alike, it shines light on many opportunities to separate contenders from pretenders that a good deal of the betting public either ignores or is unaware of. I won’t steal his thunder by giving away any of his tips, just know that his book has a place on my shelf and is regularly consulted. Perhaps the best advice Frank gives his fans is to not be stuck in their old habits, and to be willing to experiment with new ideas. Frank also goes out of his way to answer emails from his readers and has been yet another tremendous resource that has allowed me to take my game to new levels. I can’t recommend his book enough. Reading his book was an incredibly eye-opening experience. It even allowed my wife, who only dabbles in handicapping from time to time, to select frequent winners. Do yourself a favor and visit his website and seriously consider purchasing his book. http://www.oneminutehandicapper.com/
- Betting Thoroughbreds by Steve Davidowitz: While this book probably isn’t for newcomers to the game, it is an amazing resource for those looking to get into more advanced handicapping strategies. His discussions on pace analysis and class par research are able to yield the handicapper willing to go the extra mile and do the requisite extensive research with information that the majority of the competition would not understand. He’s a good friend of Andy Beyer and others. Put simply, the guy knows what he’s talking about! Another must-have for any aspiring horselayer’s library!
- The Daily Racing Form website: Not only can you read news and articles from the leading source of information on thoroughbred racing (and indeed the handicapper’s “bible”) by becoming a subsriber, there are also free tutorials contained in the “tools/fan education” menus such as:
