Laurel Park Selections – Thursday 12/27/07

Well, if you were playing along with us yesterday you know all too well that we took a pretty rough beating at Santa Anita on opening day yesterday.  Thankfully a merciful god has granted us one day of respite with which to regroup and make a determined stand on Friday.   In the meantime, I thought today gave me an opportunity to cover my local track at Laurel Park.  As always, make sure to check into late scratches/equipment changes as for whatever reason my horses at Laurel seem to scratch from races with frightening frequency.   Now it’s time for my gratuitous bastardization of a Shakespeare quote within my handicapping selections:  What’s that? Wishest thou less horses would scratch?  Pray thee cousin wish not one horse more!  I would not bet in that horse’s company who fears his fellowship to race with us!!!”

Okay, that was painfully bad so let’s just jump right into the picks shall we?  I didn’t formulate any multi-race exotics because I noticed a typo in the DRF which claimed the pick 6 was races “6 through 11″ – but there are only 9 races on the card.  I can only assume the pick 6 is races 4 through 9, but I didn’t really have a ton of time this morning to confirm.   Apparently it was much more important that I watch Bearenstein Bears videos with my son this morning.   :-) Read the rest of this entry »

Santa Anita Opening Day Picks – 12/26/07

26 12 2007
santa-anita.jpg

Wednesday marks the return of racing action to beautiful Santa Anita racetrack in southern California.   Hopefully all of you had a wonderful Christmas yesterday and are shaking off the effects of so much eggnog.  I’ve got to point out right away that I typically don’t fare very well at opening days in California.   It usually takes me a few days to get back in the swing of things and see how the tracks are playing.   Still, I couldn’t let today go by without taking a stab at the pick 4′s, as there is no racing action available on Thursday.

We were very successful with our Hollywood Park selections throughout the meet so hopefully we can keep that momentum going.  The feature event of the day is the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes which marks the return of 2007 Derby hopeful Great Hunter.  However, that is not the only stakes race on the card as we also have the California Breeder’s Champion Stakes and the Sir Beaufort Stakes sprinkled throughout the card.   So what say you then?  Will you yield and this avoid, or guilty in horse racing obsession be thus employed?  (my take on a famous Shakespeare quote). Citronnade Wins G2 Dahlia Handicap

16 12 2007

Citronnade, the 4 year old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid and esteemed member of the Horse Watch List here at the Aspiring Horseplayer triumphed in the Grade 2 Dahlia Handicap at Hollywood Park today, helping to bring home the late pick 4 for $525.20.  This marks 3 out of the last 4 days of handicapping that we’ve been able to take down the pick 4 here at The Aspiring Horseplayer!  Hopefully this has allowed some of you to experience a nice boost to your holiday bankroll.  I’m a giving kind of guy so today’s win felt tremendously satisfying.  The original article containing our selections for the day can be found at the link below: Read the rest of this entry »

Hollywood Park Selections – Sunday 12/16/07

16 12 2007

hollywoodpark-default.jpg

Sunday at Hollywood Park brings us another 10 race card that was supposed to include some very interesting horses.  Sadly the main draw of the day, the talented filly Nashoba’s Key has already scratched from the Grade 2 Dahlia Handicap.  The good news though is that as of this moment Citronnade, who is a proud member of the prestigious Horse Watch List here at the Aspiring Horseplayer looks like she may well run today in the same race.

Yesterday brought us the freakish triumph of Country Star in Holywood Starlet, as well as a first glimpse at a promising young Zenyatta that seems destined for graded stakes placement in her return.   Hopefully today there is still enough magic left in the universe to ensure an equally impressive day of racing over at the ‘Wood.  Read the rest of this entry »

Country Star Sets Track Record at Hollywood Park!

15 12 2007

country-star-default.jpg

Those lucky enough to be watching Hollywood Park on TVG Saturday evening bore witness to the arrival of two future stars of the circuit, and perhaps more.  Country Star in particular showed up big time and ran off like a freak of nature in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet causing the entire world to stand up and take notice.   The run makes her a certified freak, and lord knows I love freaks.  Read the rest of this entry »

Laurel Park Pick 6 Selections – Thursday 12/13/07

12 12 2007

laurel-park-default.jpg

Thursday afternoon brings us a chance at glory thanks to the $.50 Pick 6 pool at Laurel Park.  I typically shy away from Pick 6 plays because I don’t have the stomach to wager such large sums of money.  I’m more of a “bet a little to win a lot” type of player.  It makes things much easier on your checking account and keeps your wife from encouraging you to find a new hobby.  Typically combinations on the pick 6 ticket at many tracks are $1 and even $2 minimums.  Fifty cents helps turn the pick 6 into essentially the same price as our usual pick 4 tickets.   I’ve put together a $48 ticket that starts off 3 deep and then gives us coverage with 2 horses in each of the final 5 legs in the race sequence.   Be sure to check for scratches and other program changes prior to placing any bets, as the weather could get nasty tomorrow and the entire card may change dramatically.  I’ve gone in with the idea that conditions will be something less than ideal tomorrow.   Sleet and freezing rain are in the forecast for Baltimore.  Read the rest of this entry »

Dead Heat in Boyd Gaming’s $1 Million Delta Jackpot

7 12 2007

z-humor.jpg

Z Humor and Turf War hit the wire together in a dead heat in a thrilling edition of the Delta Jackpot at Delta Towns on Friday night, helping to bring home another small pick 4 win for $63.80.   The colt has raced against War Pass, Pyro, and Kodiak Kowboy in previous attempts and I thought would have an easier time with this field.   Perhaps the excitement of Friday night under the lights got to him a bit, but he nevertheless came home with enough to score.  Read the rest of this entry »
